NPP Shall Rise Again: Agyarko Corrects Record, Vows Loyalty

New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Chairman aspirant Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has denied taking credit for collective party achievements and rejected talk of a rift with Flag-bearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Agyarko’s team issued the rebuttal statement on 30 August, ahead of the NPP’s national executive elections on 3 October.

In the statement, the campaign corrected two claims it says are false: that Agyarko is taking personal credit for collective party achievements, and that there is friction between him and Dr Bawumia.

Campaign Spokesperson Vincent Frimpong Manu said internal contests always produce rhetoric, but two specific allegations had to be corrected before delegates vote.

He quoted Agyarko directly: “We will not respond with attacks on any fellow party member. Every candidate in this race has given years to the NPP, and after October 3rd, we will need all of them.”

The campaign then laid out Agyarko’s political biography.
It said he was a founding member of the NPP from 1992 and helped build the party’s diaspora presence “through the lean years.” He chaired the Danquah-Busia Club of North America and served as the party’s North America Coordinator.

From 1993 to 1998, he wrote a column in The Statesman newspaper “at a time when there was no political reward for doing so.”

He was National Campaign Manager for the 2012 election and later served as Policy Adviser to the presidential candidate in 2016. The statement also highlighted his role in creating the “Constituency Adoption” programme, which turned diaspora support into organised help for the party.

Professionally, Agyarko spent over 20 years at the Bank of New York, rising to Vice President and Head of Global Investment Management. He later served as Minister for Energy.

But the campaign stressed: “None of this is offered as a personal victory.”
It said the NPP’s victories “belong to the party, to its grassroots, and to the thousands who worked for them.”

No rift with Bawumia

The statement also addressed speculation about a rift with Dr Bawumia.
It said Agyarko had been asked directly whether he would interfere with the Flag-bearer. His answer, it said, has not changed: “He will not.”

“Dr Bawumia has his full support,” the statement added.

The campaign said Agyarko is not seeking the chairmanship as a “stepping stone” and is “indebted to no camp.” It argued this independence makes him a fair referee who can unite the party.

Agyarko himself addressed the issue on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme.

“Dr Bawumia is my friend, and we have a good relationship that many people do not know about,” he said. “We have worked together for a long time and have never had any issues. People should not try to create confusion between us.”

The campaign acknowledged that many delegates supported other candidates in January’s presidential primary.

It said reconciliation is “arithmetic, not sentiment” and argued that bringing those members behind the Flagbearer “will not be brought home by a Chairman with scores to settle.”

Agyarko has promised to deliver what he calls “Operation One Touch”—securing both the presidency for Dr Bawumia and a parliamentary majority in one election.

He says he will set out a detailed plan for rebuilding the party in a separate statement.
The campaign concluded by leaving the decision to delegates: “In the end, the record answers for itself,” the statement said. “Delegates will decide on October 3rd. They are entitled to decide on the facts.”
