The suspended Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, has said the female student who accused him of rape has one child, and that his account of what happened will shock Ghanaians when it is made public.
Zakaria Abdulai made the jaw-dropping claim in an interview with radio host cum popular musician, Blakk Rasta, where he also confirmed that the Police cautioned him and granted him self-recognisance bail over the allegation.
“I have been cautioned because one girl and her parents said I have raped her. So they reported, I was cautioned, and as a headmaster I was given self-recognisance bail. I’m waiting for court days,” Zakaria Abdulai explained when Blakk Rasta asked him a direct question on whether he had ben arrested.
The interview comes after reports that he had been arrested over alleged sexual assault on several female students of Obuasi SHTS, in an investigative piece titled “Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow” by JoyNews Investigative Correspondent, Manasseh Azure Awuni.
In his response, Zakaria Abdulai told Blakk Rasta that the full turn of events would change the story.
“If I give you the turn of events for this particular girl who is claiming I have raped her, you’ll be shocked,” Zakarai Abdulai said.
When Blakk Rasta asked whether his insinuation meant that the female student in question was a “bad girl”, Zakaria Abdulai said he did not know her well and would not judge her. But he added that he knew she had one child and was about 20 or 21 years old.
“I do not know her but I know she’s given birth, she has a child, she is 20 to 21 years, but I cannot judge her whether she is bad or good. I cannot. But I have my story and the Committee has heard, the Committee that did the investigation has heard my story as against the story of the girl and her people,” Zakaria Abdulai said.
News of the arrest of Headmaster Zakaria was first made public by the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
“We’ve been able to get one of the ladies, maybe I shouldn’t be putting so much information out, about semen, we are getting DNA… So, what is happening is that this gentleman has been arrested. He’s going through the due process,” Muntaka Mubarak told the Parliamentary Committee.
The Police say the docket of the case reported by one of the victims has been forwarded to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice for advice on the next line of action.
Following the JoyNews investigation, Zakaria Abdulai, who also served as Juaben Constituency Secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and was seeking to contest for Constituency Chairman, withdrew from the race under pressure from his party.
According to the JoyNews investigation, the number of female students who have come forward with allegations of sexual harassment, assault, and rape rose from an initial figure of 16 to 19. A 20-year-old Form Two student, accompanied by her father, reportedly lodged a complaint with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Obuasi on August 4, 2026.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted Zakaria Abdulai, pending a full-scale investigation into the allegations, and he has been directed to hand over the management of the school to the Ashanti Regional Director of Education.
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has also directed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to conduct a comprehensive criminal investigation into the matter.
While Zakaria Abdulai maintains his innocence, the investigations into the allegations remain ongoing. The NDC has stated that its decision to have him step aside does not determine the merits of the allegations, which remain the responsibility of the police and the courts. For now, the former constituency secretary’s immediate focus is on clearing his name, with his letter expressing hope that he will “return to active political engagement and continue contributing to the ideals and aspirations of the NDC” once the matters are resolved
Meanwhile, the embattled school head has sued Manasseh Azure Awuni and the Multimedia Group Ghana Limited for defamation, seeking GH¢2 million in damages over the sexual abuse allegations involving female students of the school.
Zakaria Abdulai is also seeking a perpetual injunction to restrain Manasseh Azure and the Multimedia Group from making or publishing any further statements he considers defamatory
