Ofori Sarpong Becomes UniMAC’s First Chancellor

Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies, Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong, has been appointed the first substantive Chancellor of the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC).

The appointment, which takes effect from August 1, 2026, was approved by the University’s Governing Council at a meeting held on May 26, 2026, in accordance with the statutes of the university.

As Chancellor, Dr Ofori Sarpong will serve as the ceremonial head of UniMAC. His responsibilities will include promoting the university’s vision, strengthening relationships between the institution and industry, and conferring degrees and other academic honours on behalf of the university.

UniMAC said the appointment was based on Dr Ofori Sarpong’s strong leadership record, business experience and commitment to education, youth development and community service.

The university expressed confidence that his leadership would help improve UniMAC’s industry partnerships and strengthen its position as Ghana’s leading institution for media, arts and communication studies.

Dr Ofori Sarpong is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Special Group of Companies, a business group with interests in manufacturing, real estate, construction and strategic investments.

He is also linked to several Ghanaian companies, including United Television (UTV), Best Point Savings and Loans Limited and U2 Salt Limited.

A Chartered Accountant by profession, Dr Ofori Sarpong holds a Master of Science degree in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom. He is also pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration at École Supérieure de Gestion (ESG), France.

He has received several awards and honours for his contribution to business, entrepreneurship and national development. These include the Global Dignity Award for Service to Humanity, which was presented at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, as well as a recognition from the New York State Senate.

In 2025, he received the Millennium Excellence Award for Business Entrepreneur of the Year and was also named CEO of the Year (Consumer Drinks) at the Ghana CEO Summit.

Beyond his business achievements, Dr Ofori Sarpong has played active roles in education and community leadership. He currently chairs the Governing Council of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) and serves on several advisory boards, including the Millennium Excellence Foundation and the University of Ghana’s College of Health Sciences.

He is also the President of the PRESEC Old Boys Association, where he provides leadership for the association’s activities worldwide.

UniMAC, established under the University of Media, Arts and Communication Act, 2020 (Act 1059), was formed through the merger of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL), and the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI).
