Only Otumfuor Is More Popular Than Me In Kumasi – Dan Quaye

Accra Hearts of Oak legend Dan Quaye says residents of Kumasi, especially the football community are his biggest admirers and can’t seem to get enough of him.

Quaye who is a self confessed Kotoko fan revealed that there have been occasions when he has traveled to play football in Kumasi and has had to be rescued from the clutches of over enthusiastic fans by the police.

The six time Ghana Premier League winner helped Accra Hearts of Oak record dominant performances over their arch-rivals Kotoko during his spell with the team from 1999 – 2006.

He jokingly bragged that the only person who gets more attention than him in the capital of the Ashanti Region is Life Patron of Asante Kotoko,Otumfuor Osei Tutu II.

“I remember after one game in Kumasi against Kotoko I was supposed to join the bus.

“The supporters did not want me to join the bus because they could not believe that it was me in the flesh.

“I could not join the bus in the stadium because the supporters were following me.

“I had to join the bus when it was by the road side and even that they wanted to follow me.

“In Kumasi after Otumfuor I am the next in line.

“Had it not been for the police they would not have allowed me to join the bus,” he laughed.

Perhaps the most infamous memory Kotoko fans have of Quaye was during the penalty shout out that decided the Caf Confederations Cup in 2004 as he taunted their fans enroute to scoring from the spot.

He is also among a host of national stars that graduated from the maiden edition of Betway’s 12th man program aimed at equipping them with skills and knowledge in areas such as entrepreneurship and Sports management.
