A 5-year-old girl has purportedly been injured by her pregnant step mother, Rebecca Awunu, who poured boiling water on the victim’s feet and buttocks as punishment for bed wetting.
The Amasaman Police Station has since last Thursday arrested and detained the suspect.
According to the victims Headmaster, Emmanuel Atisey, the 5-year-old girl had not been to school for three weeks as she was reportedly suffering from malaria.
He disclosed to Oman FM that the victim reported to school covered in gentian violet on her feet and was severely burnt but refused to disclose how she sustained the injury.
The headmaster was able to retrieve information on how the girl got the injuries after he threatened school children from the community in which the victim lives.
He directed his girl child coordinator to examine the victim, only to be shocked to see the victim’s buttocks covered in GV and burns as well.
According to sources, the family of the victim have refused to send her to the hospital for further treatment after school authorities paid for her initial hospital bills.
The incident occurred on October 26 and the victim has since been kept at home without any medical treatment, as the father is reported to have said that he didn’t have money to take her to the hospital.
Police report from the Amasaman Hospital also revealed that the vagina of the girl had been damaged and infected.
The Divisional Crime Officer, DSP Michael Happy Addae confirmed the case.
Rebecca Awunu appeared before court yesterday and was bailed on grounds of being pregnant at the Amasaman Circuit Court, with the case adjourned to December 7.
