Robbery Attacks Kill Four

The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for assailants behind two separate violent armed robbery attacks recorded on Saturday, 2 May 2026, in the Bono East and Northern Regions.

The attacks left at least four people dead and several others injured.

In an official statement released on 3 May 2026, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, ordered the deployment of intelligence officers and anti-armed robbery units to support investigations and restore security in the affected areas.

The police statement said:

“The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters and the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) to the Bono East and Northern Regions to support ongoing operations and lead a manhunt for perpetrators behind two robbery attacks recorded on 2nd May 2026.”

According to the statement, the first attack happened at Sampa near Jato Zongo in the Atebubu District. Armed men attacked a fuel station, shot and killed two people, and injured others after stealing cash from the attendant.

The second incident took place along the Walewale–Nasia stretch on the Bolgatanga–Tamale Highway. Armed men ambushed a VIP passenger bus with registration number AS 4941-24, which was travelling from Zebilla to Tamale. The attackers opened fire on the bus during the attack, killing two passengers instantly and injuring several others.

Some earlier accounts from the scene suggested one passenger died and five were injured, while later police confirmation indicated two fatalities in the bus attack.

The injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue. Several passengers are also said to be traumatised by the incident.

Police say investigations are ongoing and a manhunt has been launched for the attackers. The statement further assured the public:

“While we continue to intensify armed patrols in the affected areas, we assure the public that the perpetrators will be arrested to face the full rigours of the law.”

Security has been increased along major highways as residents continue to express fear over rising attacks.
