Roger De Sá To Be Black Stars Assistant Coach

Former Orlando Pirates coach Roger De Sá is set to join Carlos Queiroz as assistant coach of Ghana’s national team ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

According to reports by KickOff Magazine, De Sá has completed negotiations with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after agreeing on personal terms. Although details of the contract remain unclear, his deal is expected to run alongside Queiroz’s reported four-month agreement with the GFA.

De Sá confirmed his imminent arrival in Ghana, stating, “I will fly out on Thursday to Accra to start working straight away.”

The former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper also explained how quickly the appointment of Queiroz came together.

“I think when the previous coach left, the Ghana FA looked at Carlos Queiroz, and obviously it happened very quickly. Within four to five days, it was done.”

The South African tactician is no stranger to working with Queiroz. He previously served as his assistant during key assignments, including Egypt’s journey to the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and Iran’s campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. His familiarity with Queiroz’s methods is expected to be an advantage as Ghana prepares for the global tournament.

Despite his experience, De Sá admits the task ahead will not be easy. He pointed out that one of the biggest challenges will be building a strong and competitive squad within a very short time.

“Those are the challenges, but it comes with a job like this,” he said.

“I’ve been watching a lot of films, videos, watching different players with different clubs. The biggest challenge is obviously to select a team without having really enough time. And obviously, the preparations are also very short. You’ve got about two weeks to prepare your team. But ja, that’s how it is, that’s the name of the game,” he adds.

As preparations intensify, De Sá stressed that scouting and player assessment are already underway. He revealed that he has been closely monitoring players across different clubs to identify the best talents for the national team.

Still, he acknowledged the difficulty of the assignment. “It’s not easy, it’s gonna be difficult, but they’re all difficult anyway.”

De Sá has emerged as a strong candidate to be part of Queiroz’s technical team following the Portuguese coach’s recent appointment. With Queiroz expected to be officially unveiled on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Alisa Hotel, attention is now shifting to the formation of a solid backroom staff.

It remains unclear whether De Sá will be present at the unveiling ceremony. However, if his appointment is finalised, his experience and close working relationship with Queiroz could play a key role in shaping Ghana’s preparations.
