Sack Kwakwa or we strike again – KIA workers on war path with managing director

Workers of the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) have served another notice they will embark on an indefinite strike in March if authorities fail to sack the Managing Director of the company, Mr. Yaw Kwakwa.

This comes after an earlier withdrawal of service last Friday, February 26. The action disrupted local and international flight schedules with many passengers stranded.

A visit to the domestic lounge of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) by the paper saw hundreds of passengers loitering around hoping for a miracle.

They returned to the negotiation table after a firm assurance from the ministers-designate for Employment and Labour Relations, National Security and Transport, Isaac Asiamah that their concerns will be addressed.

However, speaking in an interview with Citi News, Deputy General Secretary of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) at the Airport, John Sampah said the unhappy workers are demanding the immediate removal of the Managing Director for the survival of the company.

“They believe that the Managing Director is not managing the company very well. They also believe that there are key operations that have been outsourced at exorbitant costs that should not be the case. They believe the Managing Director is sitting on staff welfare issue, viz-a-viz promotions and other things.

“If the situation is not checked, then the GACL will be run down. Their point is that until the Managing Director is removed from the company, the company will be brought down.”

The aggrieved workers say the future of the company was being risked by maintaining Mr. Kwakwa.

“Our expectation is that the Managing Director must be removed. If we allow this man to continue sitting in office, the fortunes of this company can only dwindle and the staff will not be ready for that. If he is not removed we are not backing down. We will continue increasing our levels of withdrawal of service until we get what we want, we will strike again in March if the assurance becomes a failure”
