Sammy Gyamfi’s Apology Brings Matter To An End – Presidency

The remorseful nature and public apology from Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of Gold Board, following a video that went viral on social media of him handing an undisclosed amount of United States dollars to fetish priestess turned evangelist, Patricia Oduro Koranteng, alias Nana Agradaa has been accepted from corridors of power and told to go and sin no more, Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has explained.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu who made this known during a press conference on Wednesday said, President John Dramani Mahama believes no further disciplinary action should be taken against him.

“So in view of that, the Presidency does not believe that any further actions ought to be taken beyond the apology and the caution. The Chief of Staff cautioned him, having acknowledged the apology he made, he cautioned him and impressed upon him to take on board public sentiment and act in ways that reflect public expectation.

“We must be sensitive to what Ghanaians expect from us. We are aware that Ghanaians expect high standards in the performance of our duties as public officials. We remain committed to meeting those high standards to ensure that we deliver the best of governance to our people who have been long suffering in the last few years under poor governance” he said.

He further indicated that, “The Chief of the Staff is the one who handled the matter. Immediately after the matter broke out, he extended an invitation to Mr Sammy Gyamfi to hear his side of the story because it was important to hear him before any pronouncement could be made. He heard him, and Mr Sammy Gyamfi provided his side of the story. He explained what transpired.

“The Chief of Staff also took into account the apology that Mr Sammy Gyamfi issued, which then showed a certain level of contrition and acknowledgement that there was a need to avoid such happenings. So, having apologised and having rendered his side of the story, the Chief of Staff then briefed the president, and it was determined that the apology should be followed with a caution to Mr Sammy Gyamfi to ensure that such development does not recur. It is believed that these two are sufficient as remedies to the matter at hand, and that was the basis upon which this position was taken.”

Petition Withdrawn

Meanwhile the private citizen by name, Eric Dumenu Akatsi who petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate Samuel Gyamfi, has also withdrawn his request.

“I am writing to formally withdraw the petition I submitted on 13th May, 2025, with reference number 122/12/BL. 12 regarding the instances of corruption against Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of the Ghana Good Board. After careful consideration, I have decided that it is in the best interest to withdraw this petition,” excerpt of his withdrawal letter stated.

“Accept this letter as formal notice of the withdrawal of the petition. Cease any further action related
to the petition. I appreciate the time and effort invested in reviewing the petition. If you require any additional information or documentation, please do not hesitate to contact me”.

Giving further explanation in an interview on Asempa FM Ekosisen programme, he added, “I did exactly that. As we speak now, I have directed my lawyer to withdraw the petition. It has become important that the public know that I have no personal hatred toward Sammy, the way the media has carried it as though it is a personal issue. That is not the intention. The intention was that we saw a public video, and I thought that CHRAJ should look into it as an investigative body and see whether or not there is any corruption issue in it.

“It is not that I said, there is any corruption but rather, CHRAJ should look into it but I feel that the way the whole issue has taken a twist in the media, it is in the best  interest to withdraw the petition. So I have directed my lawyer to withdraw the petition with immediate effect and also to direct CHRAJ to drop any further inquiry into the matter.”

Background of the issue

The incident in question occurred on Saturday, May 10, 2025, when Mr Gyamfi was seen in widely circulated video gifting notes of US dollars to controversial evangelist Nana Agradaa.

The video, which quickly went viral, triggered widespread public criticism and raised concerns about a possible breach of Ghana’s Foreign Exchange Act and the Code of Conduct for public appointees.

Sammy Gyamfi, on Sunday morning realizing the feedback, took to social media to describe the incident as regrettable and to give an apology.

He wrote: “Folks, I have taken notice of the wave of criticisms against my person in the last 24 hours. To clarify, this was simply a kind gesture to a fellow human being, in line with my daily and life-long custom of lending a helping hand to people in need.

“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable. I must say that, I understand the uproar that this gesture has generated, particularly from comrades who are sincerely hurt by same. To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.

“My profound appreciation goes to all those who have reached out to counsel and encourage me. I’m most grateful for your solidarity. Let me state however, that my view of public office as a privilege to serve society, solve problems and help others, has not changed. I remain focused on the task entrusted to me by His Excellency, the President for the development of our country. Stay blessed and have a blissful Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out here.”
