Singing Gospel Songs Saved Me – Ofori Amponsah

Ghanaian highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has revealed that personal struggles and the pressures of fame influenced his decision to temporarily switch from highlife music to gospel.

Speaking in an interview with Nana Romeo on Atuu on August 22, 2026, the musician explained that his relationship with God remains important to him, even though he does not necessarily attend church regularly.

“I do pray a lot. Christianity is a relationship with God but not necessarily me going to church. With me, the connection with God is still there,” he said.

Ofori Amponsah said he believes having a close relationship with God is more important than simply attending church. He explained that people should make an effort to stay connected to God, especially during difficult moments in their lives.

“The way things are among us humans, being close to God is far better and it’s the most important thing that I think we should do,” he shared.

Reflecting on his career, Ofori Amponsah admitted that he has made mistakes and disappointed people at different points in his life. He said his decision to move from highlife to gospel was one of the decisions that left some of his fans disappointed.

“I’m human and I will definitely make mistakes, which I know l’ve disappointed people on several occasions,” he stated.

“One of the disappointments was when I decided to switch from highlife to gospel and people didn’t really understand why,” he explained.

The musician was at the peak of his highlife career when he made the decision. However, he said the pressures that come with fame can affect musicians and their ability to make decisions about their lives.

“Musicians go through a lot and if you don’t take care, you wouldn’t know what to do with your life because of the pressure of fame,” he said.

According to the musician, the personal challenges he was facing at the time pushed him to seek a stronger relationship with God. He suggested that his decision to move into gospel music was connected to his need for spiritual support during that difficult period.

“That time, the things that were happening to me, I had to get closer to God more. If I didn’t take that decision then, I wouldn’t have been alive by now,” he revealed.

Ofori Amponsah has appealed to people who felt disappointed by his move from highlife to gospel to forgive him.

He explained that there were personal reasons behind the decision, but he was unable to share everything with the public at the time.

“They should forgive me, but it’s not everything that I could explain,” he noted.

The ‘Otoolege’ hitmaker said he plans to document his experiences in a book in the future. He believes the book will help people understand the circumstances surrounding some of the decisions he made during that period.

“One day, I will write everything in a book so that people will understand. Every decision I took back then had a meaning, so you all should forgive me,” he added.
