Sista Afia: Single Motherhood Scares Me

Ghanaian musician Sista Afia has opened up about her fears surrounding motherhood, saying she wants to have children within a committed relationship and a stable family rather than become a single mother.

The singer, known privately as Francisca Duncan Williams Gawugah, shared her concerns on social media, where she spoke about the growing number of single mothers and her fear of finding herself in a similar situation.

“Seeing how many single mothers there are in this generation honestly scares me,” Sista Afia said.

The musician stressed that she is not afraid of motherhood itself but is worried about raising a child without the love, commitment and family structure she has always wanted.

“I’m not afraid of motherhood, but I’m afraid of becoming a single mother or just a ‘baby mama’ without the love, commitment, and family I always envisioned,” she wrote.

According to Sista Afia, her dream is not simply to have a child but to build a home with a partner who is committed to raising the family together.

“I want to build a home, not just have a child. And honestly, that fear scares the hell out of me,” she added.

Her comments also come in the wake of her own widely discussed experiences with relationships.

In September 2025, Sista Afia revealed during an interview on The Delay that she had not been in a committed relationship for about eight years because of her feelings for a particular man.

“It is because the person I love does not love me. There is someone I love, but he does not love me,” she said.

She explained that although she had made efforts to show the man that she cared, his feelings were not equally reciprocated.

“I have time for him, but he does not have time for me. So that is why I said I love him more than he loves me,” Sista Afia disclosed.

She later confirmed that she remained single and said the man knew about her feelings.

“I’m still single. He knows himself, and because of him, I haven’t been in a proper relationship for the past eight years,” she said.

In another message aimed at women in their early 30s, Sista Afia urged them to be deliberate about their reproductive health and future while navigating relationships and family planning.

“My advice to every girl in her early 30s: be intentional with your womb and be intentional with your future,” she wrote.

“There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of in having good morals, being raised with love. Don’t let this generation make you feel foolish for wanting something genuine.”

She also encouraged women who can afford it to consider freezing their eggs, describing it as a way to give themselves more time and options.

“And if you’re in a position to, consider freezing your eggs. Give yourself the gift of time and options while you figure out life, love, and the kind of family you want,” she noted.

She added, “There is no shame in protecting your future. Freeze your eggs.”
