Sista Afia Urges Artistes to Disinfect Shared Microphones

Ghanaian musician Sista Afia has urged fellow artistes to disinfect microphones before using them during live performances, warning that shared equipment could expose performers to germs.

She made the call in a social media post on August 28, 2026, after raising concerns about the frequent use of the same microphones by different performers at events.

“I’m going to say something controversial, but my fellow artists need to hear this.

PLEASE DISINFECT THE MIC BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR MOUTH ON IT! We go from show to show sharing microphones with God knows how many people,” she wrote.

Sista Afia said musicians often move from one show to another and use microphones that have already been handled by several performers. She noted that artistes sing, speak and breathe directly into the equipment, making proper hygiene an important issue.

She also linked the practice to the possibility of exposure to germs, particularly when performers have direct contact with shared microphones.

“Then after shows, some of us come home feeling sick. I honestly think artists should start carrying a small microphone safe disinfectant/sanitizing spray or wipes in their bags and clean the mic before performing,” she said.

As a preventive measure, the musician encouraged artistes to keep microphone-safe disinfectant sprays or sanitising wipes with them so they can clean shared microphones before going on stage.

She further advised performers who can afford it to consider getting their own mini microphones. According to her, this could reduce their dependence on equipment used by several artistes during events.

Sista Afia said better hygiene practices should become part of performers’ preparations before taking the stage.

She urged her colleagues to take the matter seriously and put their health first, particularly as they regularly perform at different venues and events.

“My fellow colleagues, please let’s start taking this seriously. Your health first. Disinfect your mic before you perform,” she wrote.
