Tension is rising in Ghana’s political space as the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a fiery warning to the government over what it describes as growing intimidation and harassment of its members.
The party claimed that about 16 of its members have already been arrested since the NDC government took office, declaring that the party could make the country “extremely ungovernable” if the alleged persecution of party supporters continues.
Speaking angrily to journalists during NPP officials’ visit to the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps yesterday, the National Youth Organiser of the NPP, Salam Mustapha, accused the government of targeting opposition members through arrests and intimidation.
“If this nonsense doesn’t stop, we will weaponise our support base and make this country extremely ungovernable for them,” he thundered.
The outspoken youth leader warned that the NPP would not sit quietly while its members are allegedly being harassed over political opinions and social media comments.
“And this constant harassment and intimidation of NPP people — if you people don’t stop it, we’ll react in ways you will not be happy with,” he cautioned.
Mr Mustapha warned that attempts to silence the party through constant arrests could provoke a serious escalation.
“You have a country to govern. We are here to support and advise you from the opposition point of view. But if you turn us into enemies, we will give you rebellion,” he declared.
The explosive comments come shortly after the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, was remanded for two weeks over alleged offensive conduct likely to breach the peace and publication of false statements against a judge.
Meanwhile, the former Information Minister and MP for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who alleged that more than 16 NPP members have already been arrested since the NDC government took office accused the government of “using arrest, detention, remand as a tool to suppress voices that they do not feel comfortable with.”
“Over sixteen NPP persons have been arrested simply for comments made on social media that the government finds unpalatable.
“The whole idea is to intimidate people and ensure that everybody keeps quiet when they are failing to deliver on the promises they made to the Ghanaian people,” he added.
According to him, the NPP would respond through public advocacy and legal channels.
“We will use the platforms of public advocacy to call that out as well while we do what is necessary through the judicial system,” he stated.
