Stop luxury car tax – Car dealers tells Gov’t.

The Akufo-Addo government must withdraw the luxury car tax it recently imposed on vehicles with an engine capacity of 3.0 and more, Mr Francis Owusu, CEO of Bestman Motors, has said. According to him, the luxury car tax is a disincentive for people to buy cars, a situation, he said, will affect the business of car importers.

According to the statement, vehicles with engine capacity of 2950 Cubic Centimeters and more are required to pay respective levies, under the new regime.

Whiles owners of vehicles with engine capacity of 2950cc to 3549cc are required to pay a levy of GH¢1,000, those with 3550cc to 4049cc engine capacity are required to pay GH¢1,500.

Also, a levy of GH¢2,000 has been imposed on vehicles with engine capacity above 4049cc.

The levy, according to the statement, would be paid on the registration of vehicles and subsequently on or before the annual renewal of the roadworthy certificate of such vehicles.

The Vehicle and Assets Dealers Association of Ghana has served notice that its members will soon demonstrate against the implementation of the recently-introduced luxury car tax.

On that note; President of the Association, Eric Kweku Boateng, said the tax is not good for the country.

He told Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Wednesday, 1 August that: “We want the government to withdraw the tax or we will demonstrate.”

“The tax will affect our businesses negatively,” he added.

The collection of the recently-announced and passed luxury vehicle tax started on Wednesday. An annual levy will be imposed on vehicles with high engine capacity of 2950 cubic centimetres and more.
