Tango Over NPP Chairman

There is total confusion in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi over Mr. George Kofi Adjei, affectionately called ‘Geokad’ regarding his political status in the Nhyiaeso Constituency.

This follows a heated debate which has hit the leadership of the party in the Ashanti region as to whether Geokad is still the Nhyiaeso Constituency Chairman or not.

Two top party members in the region, Dr. Amoako Tuffuor, the Regional Disciplinary Committee Chairman, and Sam Pyne, the Regional Secretary, have openly engaged each other over the matter.

While Dr. Tuffuor, who is also a Senior Advisor to the President, insisted that Geokad had been suspended and could therefore not continue to parade himself as the chairman, Sam Pyne contended that he (Geokad) is still at post.

Dr. Amoako Tuffuor

The seeming tug-of-war started last week when Dr. Tuffuuor announced on Nhyira FM in Kumasi that Geokad had been suspended for indiscipline.

According to him, a staunch party member in the constituency, Nana Prempeh, had sent a petition to the Disciplinary Committee in the region, in which about four charges were labeled against Geokad.

He said among the charges leveled were assaulting party members, refusing to render proper accounts and deletion of names of party members from the polling station register.

Dr. Tuffuor said the Committee, after sitting on the case, found Geokad culpable of the charges and had with immediate effect suspended him indefinitely.

Sam Pyne

But in a sharp rebuttal, Sam Pyne, said Geokad is still at post as the Nhyiaeso Chairman of the party.

According to him, as the regional secretary of the party, he had not sighted or received any petition against Geokad, suggesting that Dr. Tuffuor’s claim that he had been suspended could not be true.

“Petitions against party members are received in the party office. You cannot send a petition to someone’s house for him to unilaterally take a decision against a any member”, he said, adding that the NPP is guided by a constitution.
