Teacher Licensure Exams Suspended

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has indefinitely suspended the teacher licensure exam.

The Ghana Education Service advocated that teachers should pass a special examination after mandatory training before being granted a licence to teach.

This was part of measures to enforce discipline and eliminate non-performing teachers from the system, in accordance with the Teachers Licensing Policy under the Education Act 778 (2008).

The maiden examination was scheduled to start in September 2018 but the policy was met with some resistance from various teacher unions and other teacher-related groups amidst calls for sensitisation.

However, a statement signed by Executive Secretary to the NTC, Evelyn Oduro, has announced that the licensure exam has been suspended indefinitely.

According to the NTC, the exam will now be incorporated into the curriculum of the Bachelors’ Degree programmes to be introduced into the 46 Colleges of Education starting 2018/2019 academic year.
