The organizers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), Charterhouse, are shaking things up this year by putting strict rules on who can walk the red carpet, by introducing a strictly by-invitation red carpet.
This decision comes after years of criticism about how disorganised the red carpet sessions have been.
To make the event classier and better managed, only officially invited celebrities and dignitaries will be allowed on the red carpet. This change is meant to create a more exclusive and professional experience that reflects the status of Ghana’s top music awards night.
According to Charterhouse, there will be two separate red carpet areas. The first one will be open to the media for interviews and photoshoots.
The second one, which will be shown live on TV, is where the famous question, “Who are you wearing?” will be asked. Only specially invited guests can walk this main red carpet.
Over the years, many people have complained about the TGMA red carpet. Some say the event is poorly planned, while others point out that people with little relevance or poor fashion choices often take over the space.
Last year, entertainment critic Ola Michael shared his frustration about the red carpet. He said it looked like a marketplace and blamed poor planning and weak management.
“Maybe they didn’t plan it well, or they gave the job to someone who didn’t know what to do,” he said.
Fashion expert and founder of the clothing brand Nineteen57, Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), also voiced his disappointment. While he praised the performances during the awards night, he felt the red carpet did not meet expectations.
“When you look at events in South Africa or Nigeria, their red carpets look so much better. We can do better too,” he wrote on Facebook.
With this new red carpet structure, Charterhouse is hoping to avoid the chaos of past years and bring some style and order to the show. All eyes will be on who gets the invite and who doesn’t when the stars arrive.
