TUG-OF-WAR OVER LANDFILL SITE

Some nasty scenes were nearly recorded at the Oti Landfill Site when scores of tricycles that were conveying garbage to the place were stopped on Monday morning.

Residents of Oti, where the landfill site is located, Atonsu Kuwait, and the other nearby areas, during a demonstration, prevented the tricycles from dumping refuse in the area.

They particularly blamed the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), the current managers of the Oti Landfill Site, of not doing a proper work at the place.

The protesters, wearing red arm bands, bemoaned that stench from the landfill site was becoming too much to bear, hence the decision to hit the streets in protest.

According to them, landfill site is located in the Asokwa Municipality so they should be given the right to manage the facility, instead of KMA.

It took the intervention of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, for the demonstrators to rescind their decision.

Meanwhile, Abraham Boadi, the KMA Presiding Member (PM), has stated that the KMA would not allow the Asokwa Municipality to take the management of the Oti landfill site from them.

Speaking on Nhyira FM, he said that Asokwa Municipality, which was carved out from the KMA few months ago, did not have the capacity and technical ability to manage the landfill site.
