United In Fear?

Over the past few days, Ghana’s political space as well the media has been overtaken by the news of corona virus that continues to claim people lives across the globe.

For us as Ghanaians the development has created barriers among us as a people leading to the loss of social lives.

However, while social life appear to be diminishing in the wake of the divesting effect of the sickness, there lies the hope of national unity, cohesion and development.

Already, former President John Dramani Mahama has said that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) under his leadership has assembled a technical team to collaborate with the government in combating the coronavirus pandemic

According to him, the team is made up of experts from the various fields that are required to implement a national action plan on COVID-19.

This comes on the back of the announcement of a national day of fasting and prayer by the President, Nana Akuffo-Addo on Saturday in a televised broadcast with the nation over the pandemic.

Even before this announcement, the NDC had ended a three day fasting and prayer over the same issue.

The clergy, the National Chief Imam, Corporate Ghana, NGO’s among others have all played and continue to play key roles towards minimizing the deadly impact of the disease.

THE NEW PUBLISHER finds this development especially the political camaraderie among the avowed political rivals-NDC and NPP as very commendable.

It is not secret that these two political parties disagree on everything disagreeable mostly to the chagrin of the very electorates who gave them their mandate.

The paper is of the view that the fear of the effects of Corona Virus ought not to be the only element that should unite us as a people and as a nation.

Beyond, COVID-19, are dozens of issues the two major political parties ought to work together to address from poverty alleviation, road carnage through to stabilizing the ever wobbling Ghana Cedi without the rather divisive and mostly needless politicking.
