Ursula helps Ablekuma West constituency with sale of ‘cheap foodstuff’

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West constituency, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has introduced sale of cheaper foodstuff to her constituency members to incorporate more local food products.

The move forms part of efforts to cushion the constituency members and mitigate the impact of rising food prices on the market.

On a normal day and depending on the size, a tuber of yam could cost 20 cedis or more, but residents who had same 20 cedis went home with as much as five tubers with those holding as little as five cedis also went home with a tuber.

Residents who thronged the home of the lawmaker to buy the yams expressed delight and profound gratitude for the timely intervention.

Speaking to the paper, Mrs. Ursula Ekuful justified the setting up of the intervention to satellite prices at the constituency.

She alleged that although food prices were reasonably low in the producing areas, some market women and middlemen were taking undue advantage by making supernormal profits at the expense of consumers and farmers.

She added that some patrons expressed their happiness over the low prices of the products.

She indicated that, data gathered by her showed massive disparities between prices at the production areas and urban centres due to the costs within the value chain, hence the need for the initiative.
