Use Cops for Protection – MP to Firms

The Member of Parliament for Tema East, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, has called on investors and other persons who desire to withdraw large sums of money from banks, to request security from the police so as to stave off armed robbery attacks.

According to him, although government is advocating a cashless system of trade in the country, some persons still are used to the old way of doing transactions. In that case, he said, these persons must ask the security agencies to provide them with protection to and from banking halls.

Mr Titus-Glover’s comment comes in the wake the shooting and killing of a Lebanese businessman by robbers after he had withdrawn GHS200,000 from the bank.

A police statement on the issue explained that the incident occurred at about 10.00am when 54-year-old Ahmed Safiadeen, a cashier of Delta Agro Company, went to withdraw an amount of GHS200,000.00 from a bank at the Heavy Industrial Area, Tema, to pay salaries of workers.

“Investigations so far revealed that the victim, after the bank transaction, was on his way to the office in his Toyota Corolla saloon car with registration number GN 1174 – 12, when he was suddenly accosted by four armed men a few meters from his work.

“The robbers fired several gunshots into his vehicle and robbed him of the money he had withdrawn and sped off in a four-wheel drive. The victim was immediately rushed to the Rapheal Hospital in Tema but was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Mr Titus-Glover told Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Thursday, 1 March that: “Table top payment of salaries is over, businessmen and employers must encourage their workers to open bank accounts so they can pay the salaries through those accounts.”

“It is part of the reasons that this government is advocating a cashless system but still some people will want to deal with the real cash. In that case, you can request a police escort for protection right from the banking hall to your office or wherever you are sending the money.”

He also expressed optimism that the police will be up to task to bring the perpetrators of the crime to book.
