Afenyo-Markin denies using 50-military convoy escort

The Minority Leader, Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has laughed off allegations that he moved around with a convoy of 50 soldiers when he was the Majority Leader under the 8th Parliament and dared his accusers to prove their claim.

“I have never had 50-military convoy follow me and not even the President of Ghana does that? And why would anyone even imagine such a thing? I do not know why a gentleman would put out such a direct untruth about me on live television when he knows in his heart and conscience it is not true. Maybe it is part of the propaganda and politicking just to create public anger and disaffection for me”, Afenyo-Markin told The New Publisher.

Afenyo-Markin made the comment in response to a claim put out in live television by the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who said he was aware of a former Majority Leader who moved around with a convoy of 50 military personnel.

The Majority Chief Whip fell short of mentioning which former Majority Leader but another panelist on the same television show, lawyer Martin Kpebu, boldly mentioned Afenyo-Markin as the person being referred to.

Both Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor  and Martin Kpebu were speaking on TV3’s current affairs programme, ‘The Key Points’ on Saturday, February 22, 2025,

Afenyo-Markin called into the programme and said he was watching from home and wants a fair opportunity to deny the allegation and to challenge Martin Kpebu to prove his allegation.

Afenyo-Markin was categorical that no such thing ever happened and that he currently uses a police dispatch rider in his capacity as Minority Leader but that privilege comes with his office and it was an arrangement put in place for previous Minority and Majority Leaders.

He explained that the dispatch rider he uses is not an exclusive privilege because it is an official courtesy extended to all Minority Leaders.

Martin Kpebu however insisted that the allegation he makes is true.

Interestingly, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor did not follow the line of Martin Kpebu. He explained that his statement was not meant to attack Afenyo-Markin as a person or to question official privileges due him as Minority Leader:  “I may have crossed the line a bit but for that I apologise. These were matters I was saying in general context of conduct before then and conduct now. So if what is due him, I sought to see it as an abuse, I apologise.”

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor said if Afenyo-Markin, denies using a convoy of 50 soldiers, it would have been fair to mention how many he moves around with so as to put the discussion in the right perspective.
