Renowned Ghanaian journalist and broadcaster Halifax Ansah Addo has refuted Afua Asantewaa’s claims that she received little to no support during her Guinness World Record singathon attempt, revealing that she benefited from significant financial contributions.
Speaking on The Best Entertainment Show on Okay FM on March 17, 2025, Halifax, who hosts the show, disclosed that the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) alone spent hundreds of thousands of Ghana cedis on her event. He stressed that this amount does not even include donations from individuals and public figures who supported her.
“The entire media fraternity has been led on a wild goose chase over Afua Asantewaa’s claims. The discussion revolves around whether the State, government appointees, and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia supported her during the singathon. Was she truly given only sore throat medicine after her attempt?”, he quizzed.
Upon reviewing her contract with the GTA, Halifax revealed that the government, through the GTA, committed an amount that could cover the monthly salaries of 500 Ghanaians based on the current minimum wage. Both she and the government have copies of this contract, which he has also reviewed.
“These funds were spent and accounted for, yet she turns around to claim she received no help from the government. This is the same lady who confidently told us, ‘I am done with the singathon, and I know very well that I will win. I have already submitted my works to Guinness World Records,’ knowing full well that she had broken multiple rules and could be disqualified. Is this the person we are following on this wild goose chase?”, he bluntly stated.
Halifax further warned that if the full financial contributions made in support of Afua Asantewaa were disclosed, she might be summoned by EOCO to account for the funds.
Detailing some of the expenses, he stated that the GTA alone covered approximately GHS 9,000 for her accommodation at Accra City Hotel (formerly Novotel) from December 21 to December 30, 2023. Additionally, over GHS 200,000 was spent on purchasing goods and services for the event.
“She is putting a lot of people in trouble. Is she trying to say that GTA’s sponsorship didn’t reach her? What about the money, bags of rice, and drinks given to her by Dr. Bawumia, also didn’t get to her? I spoke to her team members, and whenever she took breaks during the attempt, they informed her about the gifts and support. She even stated that she allocated three individuals: her father, her sibling, and her husband, to handle the donations.”
“The scale of the support she received is enormous and far from the narrative she’s putting out there. It’s time we, as entertainment journalists, step up our game, or else people will take us for granted and use us to tarnish reputations,” he said.
Prior to this, Unsuccessful Guinness World Record sing-a-thon contender Afua Asantewaa denied receiving a GH¢20,000 donation from former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stating that she only found out about it recently.
Speaking on United Showbiz on UTV, she stated that her team only informed her about the donation on Saturday evening and insisted she never personally received the money.
According to her, Dr. Bawumia only gave her medicine for a sore throat, and she had no knowledge of who collected the cash. She further mentioned that some people claimed her husband received it, while others suggested it was meant for her team members.
“I was just told this evening that Dr. Bawumia donated GH¢20,000, but I never received the cash myself.
“Some say my husband received it, but I don’t know. Nana Reagan and Socrate Safo mentioned that the donation was for the boys, so I don’t understand why I’m being linked to it,” she explained.
Her statement came before journalist Halifax Ansah Addo revealed that the outgone NPP government, Ghana Tourism Authority and other sponsors provided significant financial support for her event. His exposé has since fueled criticism, with many questioning Asantewaa’s initial claims that she received little to no support.
