Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is being transferred from the 37 Military Hospital to the Bank Hospital for further medical care after sustaining gunshot injuries at the entrance of her younger brother’s residence last Sunday.
Addressing journalists at the 37 Military Hospital moments before the transfer, a family member, Nana Pomaa Nyira, recounted that the former MP had told her the ghost of her late father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, founder of the Kristo Asafo Church, appeared at the scene during the shooting and blocked the bullets from hitting her directly.
Nana Pomaa Nyira, who said she is an aunt of Sarah Adwoa Safo, spoke in the Twi language: “We would not have heard good news, and we are still praying for Honourable Adwoa Safo so that the God her father served would save her. Just as she herself has said, she saw a bright light flash in her car each time the gun was fired, and the light blocked the bullets from directly hitting her. That was the spirit of her dad saving her.”
Nana Pomaa Nyira expressed unhappiness that a court granted bail to her younger brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena, and eight others who were charged over the shooting incident in Kwabenya, Accra, on June 21.
She expressed fear for the family’s safety, claiming their lives remain at risk while Akofena is out on bail. She appealed to the Inspector-General of Police and other authorities to step in and protect the former MP and her relatives.
“I Don’t Own Any Gun”
Meanwhile, Adwoa Safo has strongly denied claims that she was armed or discharged a firearm during the shooting incident at her brother’s residence in Kwabenya on June 21, 2026.
“I don’t own a gun, I didn’t shoot a gun, and I will never shoot a gun,” she stated while receiving medical treatment following the incident.
The former Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister rejected suggestions that she arrived at the premises with any intent to provoke violence, insisting she visited purely as a family member. According to her account, she went to the residence alone and without a security escort, viewing the matter as a private family issue rather than a confrontation.
Medical Condition
Adwoa Safo disclosed that medical examinations revealed bullet pellets and shattered glass fragments lodged dangerously close to her brain. She sustained injuries to her left ear during the confrontation, which she attributed to gunfire rather than any vehicular collision.
She also dismissed reports alleging she drove into the residence gate before the shooting, challenging journalists and the public to verify the condition of her vehicle, which remains in police custody. She maintains the vehicle shows only damage consistent with gunfire, with no signs of collision.
Conflicting Accounts
The incident has triggered competing narratives from involved parties. The Kristo Asafo Mission issued a statement rejecting claims that Adwoa Safo was shot, asserting instead that she “forcefully drove her vehicle into the entrance gates of the property” after a lawful church event, causing substantial damage to two metallic gates.
The church stated that numerous worshippers and invited guests were present at the time, and the actions created a serious risk to life and property. According to the church’s account, security personnel on duty intervened to prevent further escalation and protect attendees.
“We categorically reject these allegations as false and misleading. To the best of our knowledge and based on information presently available to us, no such shooting occurred,” the church stated regarding claims that Adwoa Safo was shot.
