Former National Chairman Awentami Paul Afoko has said his return to the NPP National Chairmanship race is solely about one recapturing political power and ensuring Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia wins the December 2028 presidential polls.
Addressing party faithful in the Volta, Oti, and Central Regions, Paul Afoko explained his decision to come out of retirement was not driven by personal ambition but by a deep conviction that the NPP faces an urgent need for renewal.
“I did not leave my retirement for any reason other than power. Power is our singular objective, because it is through political authority that we can implement our vision for national development,” he stated.
The chairman hopeful asserted that the NPP’s founding ideology remains the best pathway for Ghana’s progress. However, he cautioned that the party must first heal its internal divisions before it can convincingly campaign for the electorate’s trust.
In a sobering assessment, Paul Afoko highlighted the party’s sharp decline in parliamentary seats, from 169 to 87, describing it as an unmistakable warning signal. He urged the party’s elders and long-serving members not to remain passive.
“If we sit back, especially you, the elders, who have laboured for this party since your youth and fold your arms, the organisation you built is on a downward spiral,” he warned. “We are now at 87 from 169. We must all rise and declare that this party will turn the corner and ascend again.”
Central to his campaign is the “3Rs” formula: Reunite, Rebuild, Recapture. He argues that a fractured party cannot win in 2028, so the immediate priority is reconciling factions and reintegrating disaffected members.
With unity achieved, the focus shifts to strengthening grassroots structures from the polling station to the national level. Only then, he contends, can the NPP successfully recapture power from the opposition.
Paul Afoko’s appeal underscores a growing consensus within the party that deliberate structural renewal, not reactive campaigning, is essential to reversing recent electoral losses and positioning Dr. Bawumia for victory in the upcoming general elections.
