Europe Push for Ukraine Peace After Zelensky’s Nightmare Trump Visit

Britain’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, is taking a leading role in discussions about ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

On Sunday March, 2nd 2025, he hosted a major diplomatic meeting in London, bringing together European leaders, including Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky. This summit aims to find a way to stop the war and reduce Europe’s dependence on the United States for negotiations.

The meeting comes at a critical time. Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump had a tense exchange with Zelensky at the White House, which upset many Western leaders and was seen as a victory for Russia. In response, Starmer is working with France and possibly other European countries to create a plan for peace. He said Britain would discuss this plan with the United States after it is developed.

Starmer’s approach seems to challenge Trump’s earlier talks with Russia. His goal is to avoid a situation where tensions between Trump and Zelensky make negotiations more difficult. Unlike his difficult visit to the White House, Zelensky received a warm welcome in Britain. On Saturday, Starmer greeted him warmly, and British citizens cheered as his motorcade passed through Westminster. King Charles also agreed to meet with Zelensky.

Beyond diplomatic gestures, the summit carries significant importance. The West hopes to revive peace talks that recently suffered a major setback. However, Ukraine has already secured financial support from Britain. On Saturday, Starmer and Zelensky signed an agreement for a $2.8 billion loan to help Ukraine strengthen its defense. The first portion of this funding is expected to be available next week. Zelensky confirmed this in a message on Telegram, stating that the money will be used to produce weapons in Ukraine.

The tension surrounding the summit increased after Trump and U.S. Senator JD Vance criticized Zelensky, accusing him of not appreciating American military aid and of risking a larger global conflict. Their comments alarmed European leaders. Starmer, who saw the heated exchange, quickly reached out to leaders to manage the situation.

Interestingly, just a day before the argument, Starmer had persuaded Trump to change his stance on Zelensky. Trump had previously called the Ukrainian president a “dictator,” but later expressed “respect” for him. He even admitted that Ukraine might regain some occupied land in a ceasefire deal. This shift in Trump’s position had given European leaders hope, but the Oval Office confrontation with Zelensky brought them back to the starting point.

Before the London summit, Starmer emphasized the importance of the meeting. He stated, “Three years after Russia’s brutal invasion, we are at a turning point. Today, I will reaffirm my strong support for Ukraine and commit to providing resources, training, and aid to help Ukraine defend itself.”

During the meeting, Starmer told European leaders, “This is a once-in-a-generation moment for the security of Europe, and we all need to step up.” The British government outlined three main goals for the summit: meeting Ukraine’s urgent needs, negotiating a lasting peace agreement, and planning strong security guarantees for Ukraine.

Starmer reassured Zelensky and other leaders, saying, “I hope you know that we are all with you and the people of Ukraine for as long as it takes.”

The summit included key figures such as French President Emmanuel Macron, Canada’s outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, NATO officials, and other European leaders. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized the importance of keeping Western nations united in their support for Ukraine.

Both Starmer and Macron have established good relationships with Trump, and they are expected to use their influence to convince him to consider Europe’s proposals. Their efforts may be essential in steering the negotiations toward a peaceful resolution while keeping European interests at the forefront.
