RESIDENTS OF Suame Magazine, in Kumasi, are in mourning following the death of a 70-year-old woman, who has sadly been roasted by an inferno.
Madam Bawama Naya died instantly during a ferocious fire outbreak at the Suame Magazine Zone 18 near the Garages in Kumasi around 3:22am on Saturday.
According to reports, the now-deceased woman, was reportedly trapped by the fire, which travelled at a lightning speed, resulting in her untimely death.
The fire also caused massive destruction as four vehicles, nine engines, three wooden structures and three metal containers were also consumed by the fire.
The Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), DO III Atta-Aheng Mensah, in a press statement, confirmed the incident.
Firemen, he said, rushed to the fire scene with fire tenders but when they reached the scene, the woman had died and other properties had been gutted.
“Upon arrival, the fully developed fire had engulfed three (3) wooden structures, three (3) metal containers, four (4) vehicles, and nine (9) DAF vehicle engines.
“The responding crew immediately adopted both offensive and defensive firefighting strategies, successfully bringing the fire under control”, he stated.
He said “Tragically, Madam Bawama Naya, aged 70, was trapped in the fire and lost her life”, adding that her charred body had since been deposited in the morgue.
DO III Mensah said the fire fighters managed to save 3 Sprinter buses, 1 Smiling Benz bus, and 1 Opanka bus, noting that the cause of the fire is being investigated.
