Gov’t Resumes Evacuation of Ghanaians From South Africa

The Government of Ghana has announced the resumption of the next phase of its evacuation exercise to bring home Ghanaians affected by the latest wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the renewed operation, which begins on Sunday, July 26, 2026, is expected to facilitate the safe return of about 1,000 Ghanaian nationals from various parts of South Africa.

The Ministry disclosed in a press statement that the evacuation will be undertaken in batches, with the first flights scheduled to arrive at the Kotoka International Airport on Sunday, July 26, and Monday, July 27.

“The latest phase of evacuations is expected to cover about 1,000 Ghanaians and will be done in groups. The first flights are scheduled to arrive in Accra on Sunday 26th July and Monday 27th July, 2026. The evacuation exercise commences with Ghanaians who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria to voluntarily return home with Government assistance” part of the statement reads.

The exercise forms part of government’s emergency response to the deteriorating security situation in some parts of South Africa, where repeated attacks targeting foreign nationals have forced many migrants, including Ghanaians, to flee their homes and seek temporary shelter.

Officials said the latest operation will initially focus on Ghanaians who have already registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria and expressed their willingness to return home under government assistance.

The Government also announced that its emergency consular response system has been fully reactivated to provide support for citizens requiring documentation, transportation and other forms of assistance throughout the evacuation process.
