Haruna Iddrisu Warns Against Religious Restrictions In Schools

The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has issued a strong warning to educational institutions across the country to desist from imposing religious restrictions on students.

Emphasizing Ghana’s secular status, he stated that no student should be prevented from practicing their religion, calling for strict compliance with the constitutional provision of religious freedom.

“Ghana is a secular state, and so we should respect the religion of students. No student should be prevented from practicing their religion. Students should practice their religion freely as the constitution allows, and we must uphold strict compliance with religious freedom,” the Minister asserted.

The Minister made these remarks during a special meeting with the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) award winners at the Ministry of Education. The event was part of the lead-up to the 68th Independence Day Awards ceremony, which recognizes outstanding students for their academic achievements.

The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome from the Chief Director of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Marmle Andrews, who applauded the students for their dedication and hard work. “Young ones, you have earned your place to be here. Your achievements have allowed you to meet with the Minister for Education, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, and even visit the Presidency,” she remarked.

In his address, Minister Iddrisu congratulated the students on their academic excellence and urged them to embrace learning as a pathway to personal and national development. “Education remains a key driver for self-development and career growth. Your journey does not end here; it is just the beginning. If you avail yourself of the opportunity to learn and work hard, the world will open up to you,” he advised.

The Minister also stressed the importance of discipline and integrity in shaping the future of Ghana. “Integrity means honesty. Let your words be your own, and always be sincere in your actions. Your success is not just about academics but also about your character,” he noted.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing education through digital transformation. “We will provide more laptops, and innovative apps, and enhance digital learning opportunities. The future is digital, and we must equip our students accordingly,” he assured.

The event also honoured students with disabilities who excelled in the BECE despite challenges. “We are particularly happy that this award ceremony is inclusive, recognizing visually impaired and hearing-impaired students. Your determination is commendable,” he said.

The Minister took the opportunity to appreciate teachers and parents for their continuous support in nurturing young talents. “Teachers play an instrumental role in shaping students’ futures. Despite challenges, they continue to dedicate themselves to the growth of our young ones,” he acknowledged.

A special mention was made of the longstanding partnership between the Ministry of Education and Nestlé Ghana, which has supported the initiative for over 33 years. “We extend our heartfelt gratitude for their continued commitment to education,” he added.

With 52 awardees from across Ghana’s 16 regions, representing 32 public schools and 16 private schools, the event celebrated not only academic excellence but also the bright future of Ghana’s youth. As these students embark on the next phase of their educational journey, the nation looks forward to their continued success and contributions to national development.
