Ghanaian artiste Mr. Drew has credited his time with Kaywa’s Highly Spiritual Music record label for preparing him to navigate the challenges of his music career.
He revealed that his active involvement in the label’s projects helped him transition smoothly after parting ways with the company.
Speaking to Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Mr. Drew disclosed that he even financed some of his projects while under the label.
“I did fund some of the stuff while I was on the label,” he admitted.
When asked if that was part of his initial agreement, he responded, “No.”
Despite this, he said he wasn’t concerned about using his own money because he had a vision for his career and was committed to making things work, even while signed to a label.
Reflecting on his seven-year journey in the industry, Mr. Drew shared that he wished he had learned more about the business side of music earlier.
“I think the business side of it— you actually need to learn a lot. The paperwork side of it, from clearance to how your money is going to trickle in from different places, even after you are done working with somebody. You know, there’s a lot you have to learn,” he explained.
Since his contract with Highly Spiritual was initially structured as a 360 deal, he didn’t see the need to understand the business aspect deeply. However, stepping out as an independent artiste has been an eye-opener.
“Once you get off the label, you learn a lot,” he remarked.
Beyond reflecting on his career, Mr. Drew has expressed a strong desire to collaborate with American superstar Chris Brown.
In an interview with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz, he described a potential partnership with the award-winning artiste as a dream come true.
“I think it’s quite obvious—Chris Brown! Breezyyy! Imagine Drew and Breezy on stage—it would be crazy! That would be lovely,” he excitedly shared.
When asked if he had already created a song for the collaboration, Mr. Drew explained that he would rather work with Chris Brown in the studio than simply send over a song.
“No, that one we for create am for studio, so sey inside all we dey create content. I don’t want the song sent over; I want content with him. That alone is a hit! I’ll shoot and post. It will be massive,” he said in Pidgin English.
He acknowledged that making this dream a reality would require financial investment and industry connections.
“Chale, that side ebi money. We go reach there. It’s money and connections. Everything has to be right,” he noted.
Many have drawn comparisons between Mr. Drew and Chris Brown due to their shared ability to sing and dance.
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Mr. Drew has released his debut EP, The Loverboy Era, a soulful collection of songs exploring themes of love, heartbreak, and relationships.
