Ghanaian musician Sista Afia has revealed that she began working and earning her own money at the age of 15, even though she grew up in a financially comfortable home.
Speaking in an interview on Angel FM in Kumasi, she explained that her upbringing was shaped by a single mother who owned several businesses and properties. Despite the family’s comfort, her mother chose not to spoil her and instead raised her to be independent.
“I have never asked money from any man in my life before,” she stated. “I started making my own money at the age of 15.”
Sista Afia said her mother’s past struggles played a big role in how she was raised. According to her, her mother had experienced difficult moments in life before building her wealth, and that experience influenced her parenting style.
“I was raised by a single mother who was comfortable and had lots of businesses and houses, but she did not spoil me because she went through life before getting that kind of wealth,” she explained.
She added that her mother intentionally trained her to be strong and resilient from a young age.
“She raised me to have her kind of resilience,” she added.
The singer also revealed that she stopped depending on her mother financially when she was still a teenager because she wanted to build her own life and become independent.
“The last time I remember taking money from my mother was when I was 15 years old,” she said. “I wanted to make my own money.”
She noted that her decision to work was also influenced by the environment she grew up in and the friends she had around her. Many of them were already working and earning income, which pushed her to do the same.
“I loved and still love to work, and I also did not like asking people for money,” she stated.
“All my friends were not in school and were on the streets working for money and buying whatever they wanted,” she recounted.
Sista Afia said she eventually took a bold step by applying for her first job as a bar attendant. That decision, she explained, marked the beginning of her journey toward financial independence and self-reliance.
