Idris Elba announces film studio project in Accra

British actor and filmmaker Idris Elba visited King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II in Accra, where he was honoured as a son of the Ga land.

The special event took place on March 25th, 2025, at the Ga Mantse Palace, celebrating Elba’s efforts in supporting African heritage and his commitment to developing Ghana’s creative industry.

Elba was warmly welcomed by the Chief of Staff to the Ga Mantse, Justice Naa Yaale, and daughter of the late Ako Adjei, one of Ghana’s Big Six independence heroes. Her presence added historical and cultural importance to the occasion, linking Ghana’s past with its future.

The palace was filled with joy as traditional drumming, dancing, and Ga cultural displays took centre stage. Speaking at the ceremony, Elba shared his strong desire to grow Africa’s film industry.

“One of my main goals is to bring back the film industry to Africa,” Idris Elba passionately said.

“We have secured 22 acres of land near Osu Castle for a world-class film studio and school that will serve the creative community in Accra,” he added.

His announcement was greeted with loud applause. He explained that the project aims to train and employ young Ghanaian creatives while positioning Ghana as a key location for African filmmaking.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II praised Elba’s vision and promised full support for the project. He emphasised how it could help shape the future of Ghana’s youth.

“Our children and young people need guidance. This film studio will provide opportunities and direction,” the Ga Mantse said.

“We fully support this initiative because it will help develop the creative industry, especially in producing more Ga content.”

The event was attended by well-known Ghanaian actors, including George Nii Armah, Chris Attoh, Kalsoume Sinare, and Adjetey Anang. Many dignitaries also expressed excitement about the planned film studio.

Elba’s visit is a major step in Ghana’s efforts to become a global film hub. His dedication to helping young creatives and preserving African stories through film is part of his larger mission to reconnect the African diaspora with the continent.

With the Ga Mantse’s support and the involvement of industry leaders, the proposed film studio is expected to transform Ghana’s creative scene.
