The National Film Authority (NFA) has officially launched its Film Development Fund, a landmark initiative expected to address financing challenges and open a new chapter of growth for Ghana’s film industry under the leadership of its Chief Executive Officer, Kafui Danku-Pitcher.
The launch, held on Wednesday, May 20, at Silverbird Cinema in Accra, also featured the inauguration of the Film Development Fund Management Committee and the Film Classification Committee, two bodies expected to strengthen regulation, transparency and accountability within the sector.
For many stakeholders in the creative industry, the launch of the Fund is not only a major institutional intervention but also another sign of the renewed energy and direction the NFA has taken since Kafui Danku-Pitcher assumed office.
Since her appointment as CEO and Executive Secretary of the NFA, the accomplished actress, filmmaker and entrepreneur has received strong support from stakeholders across the movie industry, many of whom believe her leadership could help reposition Ghana’s film sector for global competitiveness.
Industry players have particularly praised her efforts to engage filmmakers, producers, distributors, exhibitors and other stakeholders through consultations and dialogue, an approach many say was limited in the past.
Speaking at the launch, Kafui Danku described the Film Development Fund as one of the most important interventions introduced to solve the long-standing problem of inadequate funding in the industry.
“The establishment of the Film Development Fund is one of the most significant institutional interventions towards addressing a long-standing challenge within the industry, particularly in the area of financing and investment support,” she stated.
According to her, the initiative is designed to create opportunities for filmmakers, producers, distributors, exhibitors, content creators and industry entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses while increasing the visibility of Ghanaian stories internationally.
“The Fund is therefore intended to create opportunities for filmmakers, producers, distributors, exhibitors, content creators, and industry entrepreneurs to grow more sustainable businesses, create jobs, expand audiences, and increase the global visibility of Ghanaian stories and content,” she added.
She stressed that the future of Ghana’s film industry would depend on collective efforts to create an enabling environment supported by innovation, strategic partnerships and proper regulations.
“The National Film Authority recognises that the future of the industry depends on how well we all can collectively contribute to creating an enabling environment with the right set of regulations to ensure development through audience engagement, access, innovation and strategic partnerships,” she said.
Kafui Danku further explained that the inauguration of the two committees was critical to achieving the broader vision of building a more structured and sustainable industry.
“This is why the inauguration of the Film Development Fund Management Committee and the Film Classification Committee is critical for today’s event,” she noted, adding, “two important committees that would support governance, transparency, accountability, and regulatory advancement of the industry.”
According to her, the Film Development Fund Management Committee will oversee the strategic administration and management of the Fund, while the Film Classification Committee will ensure responsible content creation and uphold standards within Ghana’s evolving film ecosystem.
The Film Development Fund Management Committee is chaired by Mawuko Kweku Afadzinu, with Kafui Danku-Pitcher serving as Executive Secretary. Other members include Samuel D. Clarkson Acheampong, George Bosompim, Selassie Ibrahim, Michael Owusu-Ansah, Augustine Abbey, Gyasiwa Ansah and Kofi Adinkra.
The Film Classification Committee is chaired by Joseph K. Amoah and comprises Lord Adama Akwetey Kanyi, Gilbert Ekow Ampah, Dr. Baba Haruna, Very Rev. Helena Opoku-Sarkodie, Issah Mahama, Ototuasuo Kantamanto Oworae Agyekum III, Daniel Clerk, Imam Adam Musah Abubakar and Karikari Bediako.
Beyond the launch of the Fund, Kafui Danku’s tenure at the NFA has been marked by consistent engagements with key industry associations and stakeholders as part of efforts to rebuild confidence and strengthen collaboration within the sector.
Her leadership style, industry experience and advocacy background have contributed to growing optimism among many creatives who believe Ghana’s film industry is entering a new era of opportunity and innovation.
With more than a decade of experience in acting, film production, entrepreneurship and advocacy, Kafui Danku-Pitcher has built a reputation as one of Ghana’s influential voices in the creative arts sector.
Many stakeholders believe the introduction of the Film Development Fund could become a turning point for the industry by helping filmmakers access financial support, improve production quality, create jobs and expand Ghanaian storytelling to international audiences.
The launch of the Fund and inauguration of the committees therefore represent not only a major policy step by the NFA but also a broader vision to position Ghana as a competitive force within the global film industry.
