Despite a violent shooting incident earlier on Sunday, the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana has installed Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I as the new leader of the church.
The installation ceremony took place on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at the Akofena Palace in Kwabenya, with church members, elders, and supporters in attendance. The mission’s official Facebook page announced the development, describing the installation as a “significant milestone.”
Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I, a son of the late founder, Apostle Emeritus Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, was selected by the church’s Council of Elders in accordance with the Kristo Asafo Mission’s constitution, which provides for a successor to be chosen from among the founder’s sons.
The installation comes amid significant legal challenges. A High Court in Accra is hearing a case filed by two senior church members, Kweku Agyenim Boateng and Seth Appiah Richard Brown. The plaintiffs argue that amendments to the church’s constitution in 2024 altered the succession line and rendered Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena ineligible. A penal notice attached to the court process warns that anyone who disregards the court order could face contempt proceedings.
The succession process has been fraught with tension following the death of Apostle Kwadwo Safo in September 2025. Earlier on the same day as the installation, former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, a daughter of the late founder, was injured in a shooting at the residence where supporters had gathered. The circumstances of that incident remain under police investigation.
Despite the disagreements and legal disputes, church leaders have maintained that the selection process was conducted in line with the institution’s constitution and traditions. As the new leader, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena I is expected to oversee the spiritual and administrative affairs of the church while advancing the vision of the late founder.
