Dennis Miracles Aboagye, who served as Communications Director for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 2024 campaign team was arrested in Accra yesterday, barely hours after he officially announced his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The arrest, which occurred hours after Miracles Aboagye announced his candidacy for NPP National Communications Director, appears to be connected to a broader context of politically sensitive arrests in Ghana rather than his declaration itself.
While the exact official reason remains unconfirmed, sources cited by the newspaper suggest he is a “person of interest” to the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), though the agency has not provided an official statement as at press time Sunday evening.
It is worth noting that Miracles Aboagye has previously been critical of what he perceives as the “weaponization” of state institutions against political opponents. He has also stated that being invited by EOCO or the BNI does not make one a criminal, suggesting that all former officials may face scrutiny.
The arrest overshadows what was otherwise a significant moment for Miracles Aboagye. Making his declaration via a video shared on social media on July 12, 2026 before his arrest, Miracles Aboagye promised to lead a communications team that “does not flinch or surrender.”
He framed his candidacy as a call to service at a defining moment for the NPP, which is undertaking internal reorganisation following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
“Our message is strong. Our record is defensible. What we need now is a communications team that does not flinch or surrender,” Miracles Aboagye stated in his announcement. He further stressed: “The opposition and intimidation will not define us. We will define ourselves.”
The former Municipal Chief Executive for Akuapem North emphasised that the battle for political success begins with the battle for public confidence, making effective communication indispensable to the party’s quest to return to government. He urged the NPP to become more deliberate in shaping public discourse rather than reacting to narratives crafted by political opponents.
“We cannot allow the opposition or intimidation to define who we are. We must define ourselves, tell our own story with confidence, and ensure Ghanaians hear the truth about our values, our record, and our vision for the future,” he said.
Since the announcement, congratulations and public endorsements have continued to pour in from party faithful, youth activists, communicators, and grassroots members across the country. Many have described his decision as timely and reflective of the party’s need for renewed energy and strategic communication.
Party supporters have rallied behind the campaign slogan, “Built to Lead. Ready to Win,” while adopting the hashtag #CommandTheNarrative to express their support and optimism for his candidacy.
Miracles Aboagye called on party faithful across the country to rally behind a renewed communications agenda founded on unity, discipline, innovation, and strategic engagement. “As we look ahead, let us stand shoulder to shoulder, strengthen our resolve, command the narrative, and work tirelessly to bring the New Patriotic Party back to power,” he urged.
According to Miracles Aboagye, his vision is to build a communications structure that is proactive, responsive, grassroots-oriented, and digitally driven, while equipping party communicators with the tools needed to effectively engage the Ghanaian electorate. He pledged to deepen collaboration between the national communication team and grassroots communicators to ensure a more coordinated message across all levels of the party.
“We must empower our communicators at the polling station, constituency and regional levels because they remain the backbone of the party’s engagement with the grassroots,” he added.
The former campaign spokesperson also stressed the importance of embracing digital platforms and emerging technologies in modern political communication. “The political communication landscape is changing rapidly, and the NPP must position itself to lead conversations both in traditional media and in the digital space,” he noted.
The position of National Communications Director is one of the key elected national executive positions within the NPP, responsible for coordinating the party’s communication strategy, media engagements, and public messaging.
Internal Contest Ahead
Denies Miracles Aboagye’s declaration comes as the NPP prepares for its national delegates conference and internal elections to elect new national executives following the party’s defeat in the 2024 general election. The contest for the National Communications Director position is expected to attract significant interest as the party seeks to rebuild its structures ahead of the 2028 general elections.
While the internal contest remains ahead, many supporters view Miracles Aboagye’s entry into the race as an opportunity to inject fresh ideas into the party’s communications architecture and further strengthen the NPP’s engagement with both its grassroots base and the wider Ghanaian public.
“I believe the best days of the NPP are ahead of us. Together, we can build a stronger communication front and prepare the party for victory in 2028,” he said.
