MPs Must Do 3 Terms Maximum – CVM

The likes of James Klutse Avedzi, MP for Ketu North who is currently serving his 5th term in Parliament after he entered the House in 2005 (14 years ago) and the MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu who is currently serving his 6th term after he entered Parliament in 1997 (22 years ago), may have to be kicked out by their constituents or completely prevented from contesting primaries, according to the Concerned Voters Movement (CVM), a socio political pressure group.

The leadership CVM is calling for the amendment of Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution to limit the tenure of Members of Parliament to a maximum of three terms; of   four years per term.

“Some persons have been in Parliament for more than 12 years yet they are unable to lobby for meaningful developmental projects for their Constituencies.

“Some persons have been in Parliament during the times of J. J. Rawlings through to Kufuor, Atta Mills, John Mahama and currently President Akufo-Addo yet their constituents have the worst road networks, no portable drinking water, school under trees, no furniture and learning materials in schools,  worst healthcare facilities, high unemployment rate and no basic social amenities”,  a statement signed by the group President, Razak Kojo Opoku noted.

It continued: “we are convinced 12 years in Parliament is more than enough to impact knowledge and experience of Parliamentary proceedings to the new entrants, who will succeed the old ones. We believe this will also help to create the platform for other persons to represent their people in Parliament”,

It stated further that “the three terms policy for Members of Parliament would help to reduce the power struggles within political parties during primaries. This approach would also help to eliminate “Mugabes”from Parliament”

It said all Members of Parliament who have been in Parliament since 1996 or 2000 should be voted out completely in the 2020 general elections because they are not the only wise persons in their Constituencies.
