Veteran Ghanaian musician Mzbel has joined forces with Icetee Records to officially introduce and sign their newest artiste, Kweku Shai, through a culturally rich oath-taking ceremony involving schnapps and eggs.
The event, steeped in tradition, saw Mzbel and the record label’s executives dressed in traditional Ga attire, swearing an oath to uphold the terms of the contract. The use of schnapps and eggs, significant symbols in Ghanaian customs, added a solemn cultural dimension to the agreement.
Mzbel emphasized the importance of trust and loyalty in the music industry, qualities she believes are fading in modern times.
“We are swearing an oath so the gods bear witness that we will all fulfill our part of the agreement. The money we invest should be matched with the same energy, creativity, and dedication to build the brand,” she stated.
She further explained that her past experiences with artistes who abandoned her support once they gained recognition inspired this approach. The traditional oath, she noted, serves as a strategic measure to ensure accountability and commitment from both parties.
Following the ritual, the formal contract was signed, officially marking the beginning of Kweku Shai’s journey with Icetee Records.
Born Belinda Ekua Amoah on December 26, 1979, in Accra, Mzbel is the youngest of seven siblings. She is the daughter of engineer Albert A. Amoah and Agnes Nyarko and was raised in James Town and Mallam.
Mzbel’s educational journey began at God’s Wisdom Preparatory and Morning Star schools before she proceeded to Korle Gonno 1 and Owusu Mills JSS in Mamprobi for her junior secondary education. She later attended Abuakwa State College between 1995 and 1997, where she pursued General Arts with a focus on Economics, Geography, and French.
As a young girl, she dreamed of becoming a newscaster. After completing SSS, she applied to the Ghana Institute of Journalism but was unable to enroll due to financial constraints. With the support of a cousin, she later pursued a bilingual secretaryship course at the Ghana Institute of Languages from 1998 to 1999.
During her studies, Mzbel discovered Manifold Tutorial College, which offered a one-year program in media production. She enrolled while continuing her language studies, where she gained knowledge in public relations, television, and radio production, laying the foundation for her career in media and music.
