Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah suffered a knee injury during Lyon’s 2-1 win over Lille in Ligue 1 on Saturday, and this injury could potentially keep him out for the rest of the season.
Lyon’s hopes of securing a spot in next season’s Champions League remain intact after their narrow victory, which leaves them just one point behind third-placed Marseille and one point ahead of fifth-placed Nice.
However, their dreams of qualifying for the prestigious tournament may be shattered after Nuamah was forced to leave the field in pain.
The 20-year-old Ghanaian winger was injured in the fifth minute of the match while battling for possession against Lille’s Gabriel Gudmundsson.
Unfortunately, Nuamah came off worse in the duel and was unable to continue playing. Ryan Cherki was brought on to replace him, and Nuamah left the pitch visibly distressed.
The severity of his injury will be confirmed after Sunday’s medical tests, but early reports suggest that Nuamah may have ruptured his cruciate ligament. This would be a major blow not just to him but also to Lyon’s push for Champions League qualification.
Midfielder Rayan Cherki, who replaced Nuamah and scored Lyon’s second goal, expressed his concern for his teammate after the game.
“A very big thought for Ernest. I know it’s not easy to get hurt, but we are all rooting for your speedy recovery. We are looking forward to your return because we need you,” he said.
Nuamah has been a crucial player for Lyon this season, scoring six goals across all competitions.
