The Independent Member of Parliament (MP) for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, has opened up about the salary he receives as a legislator in Ghana.
The former musician and political activist turned politician expressed that while he is committed to serving his people, the financial benefits of being an MP are not as rewarding as many might think.
In an interview with Adom FM on Thursday, April 3, 2025, A-Plus shared the challenges that come with parliamentary duties, revealing that after deductions, his monthly salary is only GH₵15,000. Despite the heavy workload, he said his focus remains on helping his constituents.
“My main goal is to solve people’s problems. That’s why I started the People’s Project, to help others. I don’t see it as a burden; if someone comes to me with an issue, and I know I can help, I will. But being an MP is very tough, and the salary is not good, it just not enough. After everything, I’m left with GH₵15,000 a month,” he lamented.
Reflecting on his life before entering politics, A-Plus revealed that his income from his private business far exceeded his current earnings as an MP. In fact, he pointed out that his daily income used to surpass his entire parliamentary salary.
“When I look at my bank statements from 2020, it’s obvious I was making much more money before I entered politics. In just one day, I could earn more than my current monthly salary as an MP,” he said.
A-Plus also praised the work of his fellow MPs, acknowledging that his perception of Parliament has changed since becoming a legislator. He admitted that, like many others, he once underestimated the amount of work MPs do.
“I used to think differently from the outside, but now I see the kind of work MPs actually do. One day, I plan to make my bank statements public to show the difference. The money I used to make in one day from my business was more than what I earn as an MP for a whole month. Still, MPs are doing an impressive job,” he said.
A-Plus is among several new faces in Ghana’s ninth Parliament, following the December 2024 general elections. Other prominent figures who have joined him include actor John Dumelo, businesswoman Joana Gyan Cudjoe, and entrepreneur Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
