Police ‘Abandons’ Asawase After Shooting Incident

REPORTS INDICATE that the police have temporarily stopped operating in Asawase, in the Asokore Mampong Municipality, for some time now.

The virtual ‘snub’ by the police is said to have triggered security concerns, which includes vehicular traffic and other challenges, from residents of the densely populated Kumasi suburb.

The police reportedly stopped operating in the area after seven suspected robbers were shot and killed by the police during a fierce gun battle, which led to mob action by the youth of Asawase who claimed the victims, five of who were residents of the area, were not robbers.

Not pleased with the seeming boycott, the President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, Naba Musah Akanbonga, has called for the return of the police to Asawase.

According to him, Asawase cannot survive without regular police presence. He therefore appealed for restoration of security to the area. He was worried about the massive vehicular traffic on the streets since the police decided not to operate in there again, and feared things could degenerate.

The President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs assured the police of their safety if they returned to the area.
