Police Rescue Kidnapped Man, Grab Four Suspects in Kumasi

The Ghana Police Service has rescued a 30-year-old man who was allegedly kidnapped, tortured and held for ransom in Kumasi, leading to the arrest of four suspects.

The Central North Regional Police Command said the victim, identified as Bismarck Amo, was rescued on September 11, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation after his family reported the incident to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Assin Fosu.

The four suspects arrested are Mavis Badu Acheampong, 42, a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School; Charles Doku, 53, a security guard; Oteng Baffour, 31, an electrician; and Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng, also known as Culture, whose age was not immediately known. The police said Kwarteng is also a teacher at Kumasi Girls Senior High School.

According to a police statement dated September 14, 2026, preliminary investigations showed that the incident began on September 3, 2026, after Amo allegedly defrauded Acheampong of an unspecified amount of money.

In the statement, the police said Acheampong allegedly connived with her husband, a senior military officer who is currently outside the country, to lure Amo from his residence in Assin Fosu to Kumasi through a telephone call.

Upon his arrival in Kumasi, the police said Amo was allegedly kidnapped with the help of Doku, Baffour and other accomplices who are currently at large.

The victim was allegedly held at Acheampong’s private residence from September 6 to September 11, where he was subjected to severe torture.

The suspects demanded GH¢45,000 from the victim’s family, claiming the money was to cover the amount allegedly lost through the fraud and expenses incurred in searching for him. They then filmed the torture and sent the videos to the victim’s family to pressure them to pay the ransom.

The family had already paid GH¢19,500 through mobile money transfers before reporting the matter to the police on September 8. Despite the payment, however, Amo remained in the suspects’ custody, the police said.

The police said the suspects later demanded an additional GH¢30,500 and threatened to kill the victim if the money was not paid.

According to the police, the suspects used their own mobile phones to communicate with the family in an attempt to avoid police tracking.

On September 11, the suspects allegedly attempted to move Amo to another location after realising that the police were closing in on them.

The suspects then instructed a driver to dump the victim by the roadside, but tactical officers intercepted them during the transfer and rescued Amo.

He was reportedly found partially unconscious, covered in blood and with severe bruises on his body.

Amo was immediately taken to a medical facility, where he remains admitted under police guard and is receiving treatment for his injuries.

The four suspects are in police custody and are being processed for court.

The police said a manhunt is ongoing for the senior military officer allegedly linked to the case and other accomplices who remain at large.

The Police Administration warned the public against taking the law into their own hands over financial disputes or other grievances, stressing that kidnapping, torture and extortion are serious crimes.
