Boagye Agyarko gets support from NPP constituency chairmen

Some constituency chairmen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) across the country urged Boakye Agyarko to abandon his presidential ambition and contest the party’s national chairmanship, according to his campaign.

Dr Rashid Etuaful, the Deputy Campaign Manager for Mr Agyarko, said the constituency executives believed the former Energy Minister was better positioned to reorganise and rebuild the party ahead of the 2028 general election, thereby contributing GH¢50,000 to file his nomination at the party’s headquarters.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Friday, August 28, 2026, Dr Etuaful said: “Somewhere in June last year, we had the constituency chairmen across the country tell my candidate, Hon. Boakye Agyarko, to let go of his presidential ambitions and come and take the party and organise it.”

He said Mr Agyarko initially asked for time to consider the proposal before eventually accepting the call and entering the chairmanship race.

Dr Etuaful said the support went beyond verbal encouragement, with about 50 constituency chairmen contributing GH¢50,000 to acquire Mr Agyarko’s nomination forms.

“Chairman Arhin led the team. Almost 50 chairmen came and said, ‘We said you should contest. We don’t want to spend your money. It is GH¢50,000. We chairmen have contributed, and we are bringing you the form,’” he said.

According to Dr Etuaful, the development demonstrated that Mr Agyarko’s decision to contest was driven by calls from the grassroots rather than a personal ambition to control the party.

He said the campaign had since engaged all 276 constituencies and was beginning another phase of its campaign in the Greater Accra Region.

“We have done all 276 constituencies with him everywhere. I’ve been everywhere, every constituency, with him,” he said.

Dr Etuaful said Mr Agyarko’s decision to contest was also informed by his desire to rebuild the NPP and make it competitive ahead of the 2028 election.

“He needs to see the party come back and rise again in 2028. And that is what is keeping him going,” he said.

He dismissed the suggestion that Mr Agyarko’s decision to seek the chairmanship was an attempt to revive a personal presidential ambition, insisting that the focus was on strengthening the party’s structures.

“The party cannot win, or the presidential candidate cannot win, if the party is weak,” Dr Etuaful said.
