Court remands 39 student rioters …prefects declared wanted

THE ASOKORE Mampong District Court yesterday (Tuesday) remanded 39 suspects in connection with the riots at the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational School into a correctional center.

The suspects, mostly made up of juveniles and first-time offenders, have been accused of playing key roles in causing massive destruction to properties in their school last Sunday morning.

Lawyers of the accused persons did their utmost best by strongly arguing for the court to grant bail to the suspects, who are mostly juveniles and first-time offenders, but their pleas were not heeded to.

The prosecution team, on the other hand, also prayed the court to cage all the suspects, especially, as investigations into the cause had just commenced. The court granted the wish of the prosecutors and adjourned the case to February 2, 2023.

School Prefects Wanted

In related development, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has declared all the prefects in the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational School wanted with immediate effect.

Head of REGSEC, Simon Osei-Mensah, gave the order after he had toured the school campus on Monday to personally assess the extent of damage caused by the irate students.

According to him, the prefects in the school, who by their positions are leaders of the students body, have some answers to give to the police investigators, regarding what caused the riots.

“I am telling the parents and guardians of the school prefects, who are nowhere to be found now, to surrender themselves to the police investigations team, or be declared wanted.

“They are key stakeholders in the school so they should have vital information to give to the investigators”, Simon Osei Mensah, who is the Ashanti Regional Minister, declared.

As a reminder, students of the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational School, who were peeved over poor examination results, turned their school into a war zone as they destroyed everything on sight on Sunday.
