Effutu fisherfolk get livelihood support from Afenyo-Markin

Some 500 family heads who depend on fishing for a living in the Effutu Constituency, Central Region, but have been affected by the 2022 ‘closed fishing season’ have received livelihood support in the form of bags of rice and cartons of cooking oil paid for by the Member of Parliament for the area, Alexander Afenyo-Markin who doubles as the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament.

The 2022 closed fishing season, announced by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development in collaboration with the Fisheries Commission will observed from July to August.

During the period, no fisherman is allowed to go fishing at sea to educing fishing pressure on stocks so as to allow fertile reproductive fishes a chance to lay their eggs to replace the lost population.

In simple terms it is a period that it observed to allow fish increase their population without humans going after them.

In Ghana, the closed period is observed in accordance with Section 84 of the Fisheries Act, 2002 (Act 625).

During the closed season, fisher folks do not work and it takes a toll on their livelihood.

It is for this reason that Alexander Afenyo-Markin, provided some succor to the fishing communities within his Constituency.

The presentation was done on behalf of Afenyo-Markin by the Landing Beach Committee led by the Assembly Member for the Eyipey Electoral Area; Hon Kofi Kum.

The items include bags of rice and cartons of cooking oil.

Over 500 fishermen benefitted from this benevolent gesture from the MP.

Fishermen who received the items were from the main fishing harbour in Winneba, the Woarabeba fishing community and the Akosua village fishing community.

The beneficiaries, in unison, expressed their gratitude to the MP, Afenyo-Markin and the Government led by President Nana Akufo-Addo for the kind gesture demonstrated towards them especially during this period that they needed those items the most.
