GFA Backs Queiroz for Long-Term Black Stars Job

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has recommended that Carlos Queiroz remain as head coach of the Black Stars on a long-term basis following an assessment of his performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the Executive Council (ExCo) of the association assessed the Portuguese coach’s performance and concluded that he deserves to continue in the role.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Sports, Asante Twum said the GFA is working towards finalising a new deal with Queiroz, although negotiations are still ongoing.

“The council, which is the highest decision-making body, after assessing the performance of Coach Carlos Queiroz, has agreed that the coach should stay,” he said.

He said both the GFA and Queiroz have presented their offers as part of the contract renewal discussions, but he was not aware of the specific details of the proposals.

Asante Twum also explained that the GFA cannot make the final decision on the contract alone. He said the Ministry of Sports and Recreation must review and approve the agreement because it will be responsible for paying the coach’s salary.

“The final decision does not rest solely with the FA. It must go to the ministry for them to review the contract and approve, because they will pay the coach’s salary. I don’t know what the FA’s offer is to the coach or the counteroffer he is proposing,” he added.

Reports indicate that the negotiations have reached a stalemate, with Queiroz reportedly demanding a salary of $150,000.

The disagreement has led the GFA to consider other options in case a deal with the Portuguese coach cannot be reached.

The situation is becoming urgent as Ghana prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin in September 2026.

The GFA will therefore have to resolve the coaching situation soon to ensure the Black Stars have a clear technical direction ahead of the qualifiers.

For now, the ExCo’s recommendation remains in favour of Queiroz continuing as head coach, but his long-term stay will depend on the outcome of the contract negotiations and the approval of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
