I’ll Quit TGMA – Joe Mettle

Ghanaian gospel musician Joe Mettle has said he plans to step back from future nominations at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs).

Speaking on TV3’s New Day programme on Friday, May 16, 2025, the “Kadosh” hitmaker explained that his decision is not because he feels above the awards, but because of the pressure and demands that come with being nominated.

“I think I do [have intentions to retire from the awards]. For the past three or four years, I’ve wanted to take a step back from the awards. And it’s not because I think I’ve outgrown them, no, it’s not that,” he said.

Joe Mettle said participating in the awards is demanding, especially for nominees who must promote their nomination and engage in campaigns.

“There are things the awards require that sometimes you’re not able to do. Because once you’re nominated, you need to push it, and sometimes there’s a lot going on,” he said.

He also pointed out that some people misunderstand artists who don’t campaign. “Sometimes it gets to a point where so much is happening around you that you can’t fully commit to the requirements. In the media, they might think you’re acting ‘big,’ but it’s not the case. Most of those are assumptions,” he added.

Even with his plans to step back, Joe Mettle had a good night at the 2025 TGMAs. He won two awards — Best Gospel Artiste of the Year and Best Male Vocal Performance for his song “Oba Awon Oba.”
