Koforidua laud Development Ahead of 67th Independence Celebrations

Residents of Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region, are expressing contentment with the government’s developmental efforts in preparation for the upcoming 67th Independence Day celebrations to be held in the city.

Neglected and deteriorating roads, left unattended for years, are now undergoing significant upgrades. In addition to the road improvements, malfunctioning streetlights and traffic lights are being replaced, enhancing the overall infrastructure of the city.

Recently, residents and road users of the Koforidua Mamfe road were pleasantly surprised to witness contractors beginning work on the once deplorable road.

This neglected stretch of road had made commuting challenging and hazardous, particularly at night due to its numerous potholes. To circumvent the difficulties, transport unions were forced to divert through the Adukrom-Nkurakan route, which significantly increased travel times.

The announcement that Koforidua would host Ghana’s 67th Independence Day Celebrations on March 6th further intensified efforts to rehabilitate the city’s roads. Notable dignitaries, including the President of Ivory Coast, Alassane Dramane Ouattara, are expected to attend as special guests.

As a result, major roads surrounding the Koforidua Youth Resource Center, the venue for the celebrations, are undergoing asphalt overlay and streetlight repairs, giving the city a facelift.

The ongoing developments have received positive feedback from residents, who appreciate the beautification and infrastructure improvements.

Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong, who chairs the local organizing committee, has shed light on the planned events. Preceding the main celebration are the hoisting of the national flag and a football match, followed by a “Clean Ghana Day” on Monday.

Over 21 contingents, comprising various security agencies, 11 regional schools, 16 regional capitals, and 18 groupings, will participate in the celebrations with impressive displays of equipment.

The city is buzzing with preparations as hotels are fully booked, and restaurants and pubs are stocking up to welcome guests. Residents are pleased with the ongoing infrastructure developments. One resident expressed gratitude for the improved road network, noting the visible changes in streetlights and patched potholes.

Another resident commended the ongoing efforts but questioned why similar initiatives couldn’t begin earlier.

Restaurants and pubs in the city are also gearing up to offer guests a memorable experience during the 67th Independence Anniversary celebrations. Overall, there is a sense of anticipation and excitement among residents as Koforidua prepares to host this significant national event.
