The Ashanti Regional Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is reported to have thrown its weight behind Paul Afoko, praising his proven ability to reorganize the party and calling on him to take on a leadership role ahead of the 2028 elections.
During a meeting in Kumasi, the elders were said to have described Afoko as a “household name” whose past strategies had strengthened the NPP and contributed to electoral successes. Expressing concern over the party’s waning support in the five northern regions, they urged him to work closely with flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to recover lost ground.
“We have experienced your leadership and we know your capabilities,” the Council reportedly stated. “Help bring the north home when you become National Chairman. Work with Dr. Bawumia to make a meaningful impact and leave an indelible mark on this party.”
Afoko, who is currently consulting party stakeholders ahead of an official announcement, thanked the elders and acknowledged the Ashanti Region as the NPP’s stronghold. He voiced deep concern over the party’s current state but stressed that now is not the time to assign blame for the 2024 defeat.
“Every one of us must accept responsibility,” Afoko said. “We cannot sit back and watch the party slide backwards. Our only option is to unite, pool our experience, and work collectively to return the NPP to power in 2028.” He called on members at all levels to share their knowledge and collaborate in rebuilding a stronger party.
