Otokunor Commends Nobi Agriculture’s Large-Scale Investment in Afram Plains

The Director of Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness (PIAA), Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, has paid a working visit to Nobi Agriculture, a fast-rising large-scale agribusiness venture at Sikasu Dortopon in the Afram Plains of the Eastern Region.

The visit, which took place over the weekend, offered firsthand insight into what many observers describe as one of the most ambitious private agricultural investments in Ghana in recent years.

Nobi Agriculture, founded by respected Ghanaian entrepreneur Awuah Darko, spans an expansive 21,000-acre stretch of land, much of it strategically located within a water-surrounded landscape that enhances irrigation potential.

Out of this, more than 7,000 acres have already been developed for rice cultivation, positioning the enterprise as a major contributor to Ghana’s quest for food security and import substitution.

At the heart of the operation is a sophisticated irrigation system anchored by a 23-acre reservoir with a storage capacity of 1.2 million cubic metres of water. The facility’s pumping system, capable of delivering over 1,500 cubic metres of water per minute, underscores the scale and technical depth of the investment.

The project is further supported by modern post-harvest infrastructure, including a rice mill with a processing capacity of three tonnes per hour, as well as storage silos that can hold up to 1,300 metric tonnes of produce. Industry players say such integrated systems are critical in reducing post-harvest losses and improving value addition within the agricultural sector.

Particularly noteworthy is the size of the reservoir on site, widely regarded as one of the largest of its kind in the country. Analysts believe this could serve as a model for climate-resilient farming, especially in regions prone to erratic rainfall.

In a Facebook post after touring the facility, Dr. Otokunor praised the vision and commitment of Mr. Awuah Darko, describing the project as a shining example of how private sector leadership can drive agricultural transformation.

“This is a massive and forward-thinking investment that deserves strong institutional backing,” he noted, adding that sustained government support would be key to ensuring its long-term viability and its capacity to generate employment.

He stressed that initiatives of this scale align with national priorities of boosting local production, reducing food imports, and creating jobs, particularly in rural communities.
