President Mahama to Model at Ghana Fashion Week

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to participate in the upcoming Ghana Fashion Week in July, revealing that he will walk the runway wearing outfits designed by local Ghanaian designers.

This unexpected declaration came during his speech at the national launch of the Black Star Experience, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagship creative arts programme, on Thursday, May 1st, 2025, at the Freedom and Justice Monument at Black Star Square in Accra.

“When we host the Ghana fashion week in July, I, your president, will proudly take to the catwalk,” he said.

President Mahama, accompanied by his children, expressed his deep admiration for Ghanaian fashion, noting that he prefers to wear clothes made by local designers.

“If you notice, I wear clothes made in Ghana. I have political suits all sewn by Ghanaian designers. Even if you see me wearing a suit, it is made in Ghana,” he said.

As part of the broader Black Star Experience initiative, Mahama revealed that a series of street carnivals will be held in key cities like Accra, Tamale, Kumasi, Ho, and Takoradi.

These events aim to engage the youth, boost domestic tourism, and celebrate Ghanaian culture. Additionally, a culinary showcase named “The Taste of Ghana” will spotlight the country’s rich food traditions through food fairs across the country.

The Accra Fashion Week is expected to be one of the highlights of the Black Star Experience, a year-round initiative focused on redefining Ghanaian identity, fostering job creation, and attracting investment, particularly in the fields of entertainment, arts, and education.

The Black Star Experience also promises to elevate Ghana’s cultural profile, positioning the nation as a cultural gateway for the African diaspora.

In addition to his fashion plans, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Ghanaian film industry by reinstating a ban on foreign films on the presidential jet. Reflecting on his time as president, Mahama recalled his 2012 directive to only show Ghanaian films on the aircraft, which he plans to revive once the jet returns from servicing.

Mahama also shared a humorous memory of watching a Kumawood film during his presidency, praising Ghana’s talent in the film industry. His comments were met with applause from the audience, as many industry stakeholders expressed their support for his ongoing efforts to prioritize local content in both fashion and film.
